argh

So I'm walking to my lunch destination. I know, my man made a wonderful sandwich for me this morning, but I was craving whole foods soup. Maybe it's the salt, maybe it's creeping to that time of the month....

Either way, standing outside the store are two ladies with a booth about missing children. They're calling to passer Byers like carnival workers call to their prey. They see me and start saying "hey stop on by, we've got a program to help missing children" I smile and continue walking, again "It's all about the missing children" I glare and walk onward...then as I pass by the second lady "fine I guess you don't care about the missing children".

Wha?! I really wanted to spin around and let these women know that there are other things that I feel stronger about then missing children. You know like TBA or Graft-vs-Host. It's the same rhetoric politicians use to make you think about socialized medicine...it's for the children.
Well, the missing children aren't the problem, it's a symptom.

One problem...bad parents. Yes I know there are exceptions a kid gets taken from her bedroom in middle of the night b/c some perp cut through her screen window. But, if there was better parenting the number wouldn't be so high of them missing (who knows, maybe a majority of these kids are still asleep in their bed but mom can't see straight from downing Mr. jack)

Second problem...sick perverted pedophiles or women who snatch infants. That's who's taking the kids who aren't running away from bad parents! So, my concentration goes to other places instead of giving money to a missing children group that's using the money to pay the people to stand on the corner and harass folks to give them money. You know like TBA or Graft-vs-Host.

You summed it up well, comparing them to carnival barkers - tricking rubes into parting with their ducats. I have no problem with giving to worthy causes - I'll seek them out myself. When they're seeking me out, I tend to be a lot more wary, if for no other reason then it's a sign that more money's being spent acquiring money and less money's being spend on the worthy cause they purport to be helping.

I agree with you on where the money is being spent. My man also points out when groups send you fancy pamphlets and address labels. That's money being spent on something other than the cause...even though I do appreciate the address labels...
